What Color Blindness Actually Means

“Color blind” is a slightly misleading phrase. The vast majority of people with color vision deficiency are not blind to color at all — they simply perceive certain colors differently, often confusing pairs that others distinguish easily. True total color blindness, seeing the world only in shades of gray, is very rare.

Color vision relies on retinal cells called cones. Most people have three types, each most sensitive to a different part of the spectrum: long wavelengths (perceived as red), medium (green), and short (blue). Your brain compares their signals to build the colors you experience. When one cone type is missing or shifted, those comparisons change — and so do the colors you can tell apart.

The Main Types

Color vision deficiencies are grouped by which cone type is affected. The terminology sounds technical, but the pattern is straightforward once you connect each name to its cone.

Red-green deficiencies (the most common)

Because red and green sit close together in how the eye processes them, these deficiencies overlap. Traffic lights, ripe-versus-unripe fruit, and red text on a green background are classic trouble spots.

Blue-yellow and complete deficiencies

Tritan types involve the short-wavelength (blue) cones. Blues can be confused with greens, and yellows can appear washed out. These are much less common than red-green types. Rarer still are forms sometimes called achromatopsia, with little or no functioning color vision, usually identified early in life.
